Established in 1980 as an independent elementary school under charter of the Province of Ontario, The Mabin School is co-educational and non-denominational.  We are operated by the Torch Educational Foundation, a registered non-profit organization.

Our school offers a full day program for boys and girls ages four to eleven (Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6) in an enriched environment where personal excellence in academics is emphasized.  Subjects are taught under guidelines laid down by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

We are committed to developing confident, independent learners through a child-centred approach to education in which children’s developmental levels, needs, interests, and learning styles are taken into account.  All aspects of the child’s development — social, emotional, intellectual, and physical — are considered, given equal importance and nurtured.

Our basic objective is the acquisition of a solid academic foundation in a warm, secure and enriching environment.  Each grade has specific goals for academic skills and knowledge and children’s interests often form the focal points through which they are studied.  Children are encouraged to apply their curiosity and creativity towards solving problems and making decisions.

Progress is closely monitored and programs are individualized to ensure that each child is able to maximize his or her potential.  The child’s eight years at The Mabin School are viewed as a whole.  Each year’s learning is based on what went before and the curriculum is seen as cumulative.  This approach instills a sense of responsibility and provides a degree of independence that permits children to develop strong, positive self-images and a healthy respect for the needs of others.

The Mabin School was founded in 1980 by Geraldine Mabin.  She was born and educated in England where she taught for nine years before coming to Toronto.  She joined the Institute of Child Study, University of Toronto in 1971, teaching children and mentoring Early Childhood student teachers for nine years, the latter three in the position of Principal.  While Gerry retired as Principal of our school in 1998, she remains closely involved.

Our Principal - Lynn Seligman
A member of the Mabin community for over 20 years, Lynn Seligman has filled the role of classroom teacher, Vice-Principal and now Principal.  A graduate of the University of Toronto and The Toronto Teachers’ College, Lynn came to The Mabin School in 1985 after teaching in a variety of public and private schools. She has taught almost every grade at Mabin.  When our school decided to extend itself to Grades 5 and 6, Lynn’s expertise was vital in the development of the program.  She found her niche teaching Grade 6 and remained there for nine years before taking on administrative duties.  Lynn’s intrinsic knowledge of and passion for the Mabin approach makes her the ideal leader for our school.  Co-author of the children’s book, Warner, Don’t Forget, her love of teaching has never wavered and she remains active in the classroom.

The Board of Directors
Our school is operated by The Torch Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization.  It is governed by a Board of Directors whose responsibilities include establishing the school’s policies and procedures, overseeing the school’s fiscal management, and the setting of academic fees.  The Board consists of parents, teachers, consultants and principals from other schools who meet at least six times per fiscal year.

Teachers
Our eight qualified classroom teachers (JK to Grade 6) are supported by expert resource teachers and specialist instructors in Art, Music, French, Computers, Science and Physical Education.  Professional, inventive and fun, Mabin teachers are committed to making a real difference in children’s lives.  A low faculty turnover ensures a balance of experienced tenured professionals and young enthusiastic teachers to give students a full range of teaching talent. We are committed to maintaining the high teaching standards for which our school is recognized by supporting ongoing professional development opportunities.  Our teachers are often assisted by student teachers and teaching interns from accredited educational programs.
