COMPUTER, INTERNET AND EMAIL USE AT THE MABIN SCHOOL

Computer Use

At The Mabin School computer use is viewed as an integral part of our student’s educational experience. Whenever appropriate, students are encouraged to use computer technology to support their classroom learning and in turn as a means of developing and enhancing their basic computer skills. The Mabin School staff selects all of the educational software that is made available to the students. This software is made available via a managed network environment that requires students to use a password to log into the system. Students save their work on a central server and thereby are able to access their work from any computer in the school. Wired stationary computers are available in all classrooms while wireless laptops are made available to students in Grades 3 to 6. To ensure that their files are safe and that the network and computers at The Mabin School remain functional, students are expected to observe the following guidelines while using the computers:

Computer Use Guidelines

1. Students must be productive while at the computer
2. Students must treat the computers with care
3. Students must not share their passwords or work in other people’s accounts
4. Students must always carry laptops with two hands
5. Students must return laptops to the correct cart slot and plug in the power cord

 

Internet & eMail Use

Beginning in Grade 1, students are progressively introduced to the resources available on the World Wide Web and how they can constructively use the resources they can access via the Internet. In Grade 4, students are provided with an eMail account to help support the completion of homework. In preparation for having a Mabin eMail account, the students receive instruction on the responsibilities and proper use of their accounts. The following guidelines are to be followed when using the Internet and/or their eMail accounts:

Internet & eMail Guidelines:

Students must decide if the Internet is the best tool for the work they want to do.

1. While using the Internet, students are responsible for good behaviour, just as they are in a classroom or participating in any school activity
2. Student must be productive when they are browsing or searching on the Internet
3. Students must make sure that the topics they browse or search are appropriate and would not offend other students or teachers
4. Students are not to play Internet games involving “chatting” on-line with other people
5. Students must use their Mabin eMail accounts only for school purposes and at no time are they permitted to use their accounts for registration purposes

SPECIAL NOTE: During school, teachers will guide students toward appropriate materials and activities. Outside of school, families bear responsibility for such guidance as they must also exercise with information sources such as television, telephones, movies, radio and other potentially offensive media.
